Onpa taas ollut jännää viime päivinä. Sirkuksessa torstaina jatkettiin
draamaa ja ylipäätään leikittiin improvisaatio- ja näytelmäleikkejä. Lisäksi pääsin
Aleksin mukana Katuturan sairaalalle pällistelemään leikkassalin menoa. Näytin
aika prolta kaikki hoitajatamineet päällä, luulipa yksi lääkäri mua valvovaksi
hoitajaksikin : ) Pääsin seuraamaan keskenmenon jälkeisiä kaavintoja sekä yhtä
paikallispuudutuksessa tehtyä hematooman puhkaisua/hoitotoimenpidettä. Joku
osaisi varmasti selittää hematooman fiksusti, mutta mulle se näytti vaan
jumalattoman isolta patilta tai paiseelta. Potilaalla oli se alaselässä ja
kokoa oli mun kahden nyrkin verran!! Paikalla oli tässä hematoomaleikkauksessa
vain kirurgi ja Aleksi hoitajana sekä mä, eli kun kahdella muulla oli kädet
täynnä mä sitten availin käsinepaketteja ja antelin milloin mitäkin... Olin
kyllä aika kauhuissani, kun ei mulla ole tietenkään mitään tietoa leikkaussalin
extratarkoista hygieniakäytännöistä, mitä nyt Aleksi oli ohjeistanut, mutta
eipä se tuntunut olevan niin nokonnuukaa... Lääkäri ei halunnut itse käyttää
suojamaskia, kun oli kuulemma allergiaa ja tarvitsi aivastella. Eikös silloin
just sitä maskia pitäs nimenomaan käyttää? Näin kuitenkin miten patti
puhkaistiin, puhdistettiin ja ommeltiin takaisin kiinni. Ja gynekologisessa
salissa kaavintoja tehtiin aikalailla liukuhihnalta. Maksimissaan puoli tuntia
per tapaus ja seuraavaa sisään. Pääsinpä mä sielläkin tosi toimiin, kun
instrumenttihoitaja, mukava iäkkäämpi täti, vaan koppas mut kainaloon ja käski
kaataa milloin siitä ja milloin tästä pullosta tähän ja tähän astiaan... Huh
huh.
Viikonlopun ohjelmassa oli vihdoin kauan odotettu
safarimatka Etoshan kansallispuistoon. Lähdimme perjantaina aamu-neljältä
ruotsalaisten ja kolmen saksalaistytön kanssa pikkubussilla kohden pohjoista:
matka kesti varmaankin 6-7 tuntia. Olimme kuitenkin hyvissä ajoin perillä ja
ehdimme nähdä monenlaisia antilooppeja ja seeproja matkalla leiripaikalle.
Leirintäalue oli varsin viihtyisä, suihkut ja vessat oli ok sekä ruuanlaittoon
oli hyvät mahdollisuudet. Lisäksi alueella oli ravintola, josta sai erinomaista
aamiaista. Alunperin oli kyllä tarkoitus kokota ihan omat aamiaiset, mutta
yöllä olivat jonkin sortin mäyrät tuhonneet meidän kaasulieden, joten eipä
siitä sitten tullut mitään. Illalla autokuskimme ja safarioppaamme kuitenkin
pyöräytti meille maistuvat curry-kanat, joka maistui entistä paremmalle kun
koko päivänä ruokahuolto oli ollut vähän mitä sattuu. Muutenkin tulin vähän
elettyä snacksien voimalla kun ruokaa sai kaksi kertaa päivässä, aamulla
aamupalan joka oli onneksi tuhti ja myöhemmin kuuden jälkeen illalla.
Lauantai-iltana grillasimme nuotiolla ja saimme myös herkullista lihapataa
kurpitsoiden kera. Yövyimme teltoissa lähellä eläinten juomapaikkaa, jossa
auringonlaskun aikaan kävi kova kuhina. Näimme kerralla varmaankin 30 norsua ja
sarvikuonoja. Kävipä yksi leijonakin yrittämässä samalla lammella, mutta
sarvikuonot ajoivat sen ronskisti tiehensä. Koko reissulla kaiken kaikkiaan
tapasimme kirahveja, seeproja, gnuita, hyppygaselleja, oryxeja (mikä lienee
suomeksi?), kuduja, sarvikuonoja, yhden Pumban, norsuja ja joitakin emun
tapaisia isoja lintuja, jotka eivät osanneet lentää. Kuulimmepa myös hyeenojen mehevän
naurun. Saalistajat pysyttelivät piilossa, mutta hyviä kuvia silti saatiin.

It’s been
quite exciting few days again. At the circus practice we have continued with
drama, on Thursday’s workshop we played a lot of drama and improvision games. Furthermore,
I got the chance to go to see how things are done at the surgery ward of
Katutura State Hospital. One day I just went with Aleksi, I dressed like a
proper theatre nurse, and must say that I looked really pro with the green
clothes and masks and everything. One doctor even thought I was the controlling
nurse of the surgery : ) I was following the curettages (after miscarriages) in
the gynecological theatre and one hematoma surgery. Someone could probably
explain hematoma better, but for me it just seemed like a big lump or blain.
The patient had it in his lower back and it was twice of the size of my fist!!
In this local anesthesia surgery there were only the surgeon and Aleksi as a
nurse plus me, so when the two others were occupied I had to open the glove
packages and once in a while give this and hand that. I was little bit nervous
about this, because naturally I don’t know the hygiene practices of the
surgeries very well, only something that Aleksi has told me, but apparently it
was not so strict. The doctor himself did not want to use the mask as he had some
allergy and he needed to sneeze once in a while. So the mask would be just on
the way… Hmm, isn’t it the time when you especially should use the mask?
However, I saw how the lump was cut open, cleaned and stitched. And in the
gynecological theatre the curettages were done quite fast, in hour and half we
had four patients. And of course I also had to scrub in this theatre as the
instrument nurse just told me to take that bottle and pour it into that container
and from the other bottle to that container… Must admit that I was little bit
scared.
From Friday
to Sunday we were on the safari trip in Etosha National Park. Finally! I had
waited this for so long! We left at four in the Friday morning and drove 6-7
hours up to North. When we reached Etosha we had plenty of time to see
antilopes and zebras before we had to build our camp in the Halali camping
site. The camping site was quite cozy, the showers and toilets were ok and
there was a good kitchen where to cook food. There was also a restaurant
serving really nice breakfast, although the first intention was to prepare the
breakfast by ourselves, but as the badgers destroyed our gas stove during the
first night we had to go with the plan b. In the evening our driver and safari
guide cooked us nice curry chicken, which tasted even better as the food service
happened only twice a day. Early in the morning and after sunset. In between we
just had to rely on our snacks, cookies and crackers not to starve. But curry
chicken was great same as the bbq and meat stew on Saturday. The camping site
was just next to the water hole where the animals came to drink after dark, and
in our first night we saw like 30 elephants at once as the whole group of them
came for fresh water. At the same time we saw some rhinos and even one shy
female lion, who tried to fit in the same pond. Nevertheless, despite the tries
the rhinos pushed the lion back to the bushes. All in all, during our Etosha
trip we met giraffes, zebras, gnus, springboks, oryxes, kudus, rhinos, one
Pumba, elephants and some big birds like emus, which couldn’t fly. Oh and we
heard the hyenas laughing. The predators stayed hidden, but we got other great
photo material.
